Skyler Brickley

2013

United States artist Skyler Brickley commissioned Royal Customs to contribute to a series of sculptural works presented at Abu Dhabi Art 2013 and his Meltdown exhibition in Dubai.

Brickley’s practice at the time explored the relationship between industrial processes and contemporary art, transforming materials such as PETG and fiberglass through melting, forming and distortion before returning them to highly refined surfaces. Drawing on Royal Customs’ experience in automotive finishing, the works were painted and finished using processes more commonly associated with the motor car, creating a deliberate tension between their manipulated forms and immaculate surfaces.

The commission predates The Atrium, but reflects the same exchange between artist, material and specialist craftsmanship that the Atelier continues today.
