From a Sri Lankan Mine to the Atrium Collection

A journey shaped by discovery, human judgement and the search for something remarkable.

Long before a sapphire reaches The Atrium, its journey has already begun.

In Sri Lanka, the search is often quiet and patient. Miners work through layers of ground to reach gem-bearing gravel, bringing it to the surface to be washed and examined by hand. Among countless fragments of rock, occasionally something catches an experienced eye. A trace of color, an unexpected translucency, the possibility of something precious.

In its rough form, a sapphire gives little away. Its beauty is not always immediately apparent. Color can be concealed within an irregular shape, clarity interrupted by natural inclusions, and the brilliance of the finished stone still waiting to be revealed.

From here begins a process of judgement and transformation. Rough stones are studied, sorted and eventually cut, with each decision determining how much of their natural colour, character and brilliance will emerge. A fraction of a degree, a little more depth, a different orientation, any choice made can profoundly change what a stone becomes.

And even then, only a few will find their way into The Atrium Collection.

Sam Solh and Reina Arakji personally handpick every sapphire considered for the Collection. Each stone is examined individually, under different light and from different angles. Color, clarity, cut, proportion and brilliance all matter, but numbers and specifications tell only part of the story.

There must also be character.

Sometimes it is the depth of a blue, the warmth of a yellow or the particular fire within a pink. Sometimes it is harder to define: A stone with noticeable quality that makes it stand apart from the many others around it.

The search can mean seeing dozens of sapphires to find one. A stone enters the Collection only when Sam and Reina believe it deserves to be there.

Those selected continue their journey to Dubai and to The Atrium. Here, they are photographed, documented and presented individually as part of the Gemstone Collection, each retaining its own origin and character within the wider Collection.

By the time we encounter a finished sapphire, almost everything that came before has disappeared from view: the mine, the rough stone, the searching, the hands that examined it and the decisions that slowly revealed what was within.
